Europe

In area, Europe is the second smallest continent of the world. There is a total area of 10,400,000 kilometers ². It is not much bigger than the continent of Australia. East-west direction, the extremes of Iceland and Nova Zembla, in north-south direction of Franz Josef Land and Crete, or rather more southerly island of Gavdos. The continent can be divided into three main parts: a "hull" roughly consisting of Russian and Ukrainian territory west of the Urals, and one European and one Scandinavian peninsula. The Peninsula Europe, in the east is bounded by the shortest connecting line (from Kaliningrad to Odessa) between the Baltic and the Black Sea, is slightly larger than the Arabian Peninsula and in turn branched into smaller peninsulas, such as the Iberian (Spain and Portugal ), the Apennines (the "boot" of Italy), the Balkans (Greece) and Jutland (Denmark). Europe is defined in this article:

• the European continent;
• the islands on the continental shelf, the British Isles are also Europe, suggests an old English word "Britain and Europe" that would be two different entities.
• islands not on the continental shelf, but are still often considered part of Europe (indicated by (1));
• the Urals, the Ural River, Caspian Sea, the Caucasus, the Black Sea, the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles are seen as the European-Asian border.
