Greece (Greek: Ellas), officially the (third) Hellenic Republic (Greek: Ελληνική Δημοκρατία, Elliniki democracy) is a country in Southern Europe, consisting of the southernmost part of the Balkan Peninsula and numerous islands. These islands are approximately 20 percent of the land surface. Greece is bordered in the north (from west to east) to Albania, the country Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. For the rest of mainland Greece is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea (south), the Ionian Sea (west) and the Aegean Sea (east). The largest islands are Crete, Euboea, Lesbos and Rhodes.
